When Cynthia was very young and fresh out of school with a shiny new music degree in voice and piano, she was already on the path to becoming known as the hymn singer.  She had sung since she could remember in her father's various congregations, and she always sang hymns because there were precious few other options from which to choose.  Lyrics were of primary importance to her and she always knew that hymns were an impeccable source of life changing lyrics.

On this recording one hears many favorites.  On her recording of the popular gospel hymn, "Love Lifted Me" Cynthia makes a daring stylistic choice (something for which she would later became known and admired). One might think that the opening phrase, "I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore" would suggest that a soloist might sing it in a somber style; however, Cynthia sang it with a lilt because she felt the truth of the song.  Her youth was as sparkling as her faith and both qualities are evident in her voice in this early recording. 

She was singing for producer Buryl Red songs for the historic radio show, "The Baptist Hour," when Buryl asked her if she would be interested in making an album.  She was delighted at his request, his professionalism and sterling artistry, and immediately agreed to do so. The results of that invitation to make a record resulted in this classic album called, "In the Garden."

Through out the decades of her career as a recording and concert artist, few songs have had as many requests as the title song of this early Cynthia Clawson recording.  Buryl catches all the good news in this old favorite hymn just as Cynthia had sung it growing up singing in churches across the country.  Often sung at the funerals of dear, departed old saints, Cynthia sings it as Mary Magdalene might have sung it that first Easter on meeting the resurrected Lord.  It is a joyful—not sad—song. This recording reminds us once again why the gospel is called good news!
