Word Will Never Do

"Words Will Never Do" seemed like a strange title by songwriter and poet Nathan Brown; but the moment I heard his wonderful song by that name, I knew that he loved words as much as I do.  It was at the height of the 80’s music scene and I was feeling a bit excluded from all those unique rhythms with a hint of disco.  My recording company set me up with a new producer who was au currant with that musical style and so with fear and trepidation, I went to Atlanta, Georgia to record this new project.  I had great material with powerful lyrics by writers like Babbie Mason and her song "Trust His Heart," Nathan Brown, Lynn Keesecker, Raymond Brown, etc.  Raymond had urged me to record a song recorded a few years earlier by Bette Midler called "All I Need to Know." It was a wonderful song and sounded so spiritual that I was pleased to record it. Imagine my surprise when, on the day we finished recording it, and were driving back to the hotel, we heard on the radio a new recording by Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville… you guessed it! It was their remarkable recording of "All I Need to Know."  I loved their recording and mine.  Theirs sold a bit more, I think.

I loved singing with Wayne Watson in a duet on "Trust His Heart," because Wayne was a good singer with a great sense of harmony who sang soul. Soul singer. 

The artwork on the cover was shot at the Gulf of Mexico.  If you look at it a certain way, it looks as though I am walking on the water (which I have never done but sometimes felt like I have).  Those where strange, happy times, and this collection of good songs sound strong and adventurous to me now.  I agree with Nathan Brown, there are times when words fail then faith and an unexplainable knowing are what get you through.  And when that happens, it is almost like walking on water. --Cynthia Clawson
